Wire · 250 ml

A wheel-thrown 250 ml stoneware cup from the SILT collection, made in Berlin. A soft cream surface meets a hand-fitted stainless-steel wire band. The lightest tone in this range, shaped for a full coffee or tea and everyday pauses.

How I make it

I use the same iron oxide as in the rest of the range, but mix it thinner for this cup, so it fires cream rather than dark rust. I apply the diluted slip with my fingers, leaving traces of the process on the surface.

The thinner slip settles less evenly than my standard mix, creating soft edges rather than a sharp line. I carve the groove for the wire during trimming and fit the stainless-steel band by hand after firing.

Use and care

Suited to a full coffee or tea. Hand wash recommended to preserve the wire finish. Do not use in a microwave: the cup has a metal wire band. Stoneware and wire may feel warm with hot contents; handle with care.
