Wire

A wheel-thrown 150 ml stoneware cup from the MIRE collection, made in Berlin. A deep anthracite glaze meets a hand-fitted stainless-steel wire band: a simple form shaped for espresso, a short tea and everyday pauses.

How I make it

I keep the shape simple on purpose. The glaze and the wire already carry enough character, so the form does not need to compete. Anthracite is a glaze I keep coming back to, one of my favourites.

I dip the whole cup in one even glaze, without hand-painted slip. The groove for the wire is carved during trimming; after firing, I fit the stainless-steel band by hand. Small differences in glaze thickness at the rim and base mean no two MIRE cups come out of the kiln quite the same.

Use and care

Suited to espresso or a short tea. Hand wash recommended to preserve the wire finish. Do not use in a microwave: the cup has a metal wire band. Stoneware and wire may feel warm with hot contents; handle with care.
